I would like to say The Origin of Species - and if I had read it when it was suggested by my school biology teacher it probably would have been. As it was I read The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins first, which basically has the same information. If you want to really appreciate just how wonderful the Universe and we really are, then you can't get a better summary.
One interesting aside - how many books on this thread are so well known that you don't need to say the author's name?
