It might start with a loving suggestion that we KNOW is not our own: HOW can there POSSIBLY be forgiveness after all those things I said and felt? But it's unmistakable: we feel a love coming from outside of us.
In Alcoholics Anonymous, we refer to that as a Higher Power. Atheists and agnostics have gotten sober with a Higher Power, so it need not be the Christian God...it's "the god of our own understanding". It HAS to be the god of OUR understanding, because Henry Kissinger's God surely would not let us go unpunished!
You'll start to recognise little suggestions that seem to be for our own good. As we start heeding these kind suggestions, we grow. As we grow, we naturally start to look for the source of these suggestions, and we start finding that we're being guided from On High. This vulnerable stage of our recovery...spiritual recovery...is when the old impacted energies will seek to re-establish their places in our minds. It is also when "demons and devils" will try their hardest to throw us off track.
When you KNOW you're receiving an instruction for your betterment, follow it. One little, simple step like that gets you a step toward the brighter light. As you go, just a prayer to your God will keep you in that directions. As you grow with this, you start to shed the discordant energies, and your guides can start making themselves apparent to you. Remember: they have difficulty with many of our earth-bound beliefs and dysfunctions. For their own self-preservation, they necessarily need to distance themselves from the "viruses". So as we progress and make our hearts clear, they have a better environment in which to work with us.
Once some basics are established, and you're assured these 'voices' and hunches are not demonic, you will grow, in your own way, with your guide spirits. The more you discard dark thoughts, and take on Light, the more it accelerates.
Soon, just Like Jesus, you have a direct line to God.
The God of YOUR understanding.
