First of all, in my experience there are usually three to five Core States for each person.
I have four. I usually can access them pretty anywhere and even mix them, depending on the way I need to feel. The intensity is usually lower then can be achieved during the meditation. It is not a bad thing. Entering any of my core states would be plain dangerous. They are accompanied by a powerful hormones rush (that's why Core States feel so good). The effect can be compared to the effect of pretty large dose of alcohol or amphetamines.
So while in this state I could easily drop things (think hot kettle), crash into things, trip (I wouldn't fall down or injure myself though). I'm afraid to think what can happen if I enter a core state while driving. Also I don't want to scare people around into thinking that I'm having a heart attack or calling the police to arrest me as a substance abuser.
But that happens if I enter a core state completely. Like 400% percent completely. That's about a maximum I can reach now without somebody keeping an eye on me. In the everyday life I use about 3-5% to get the benefits without problems.
To do so in the past I used anchoring from NLP. Now I practiced so much that I just need to think about the anchor and I'm there. Then I hallucinate four knobs to control the intensity of each of the core states to create a desired mix.
I'd second the tip from agnostic, I've seen breathing working really well. Personally, I prefer the visual anchors, they are just so much faster for me.
The main benefit from core states for me is that I know that I can access them from time to time. Since many things that we do in life are just the futile attempts to reach core states, I can stop doing these things and go directly where I need. It is liberating.
