I believe people are more open online because there is a certain anonymity here where no one really knows who you are and you are basically completely safe. I mean,if you insult someone, there is a much less chance that they will hurt you, seeing that they most likely do not know who you are. Also, you can bear your soul to someone who you have never met in real life and there is no real risk because you do not know this person and even if they do not repsond, you really have nothing to lose.
There are no awkward pauses online either.
