This may seem unusual, but I decided to become like the majority in this city (my native city!) and on this planet just to put arrogant and rude people in their place. For a big part of my life I never stood up to anybody, I was never rude and as a result everybody walked over me. However I did not solve this through becoming rude myself and try to get even. Its difficult to explain how I did solve it, you probably need to experience it yourself. For me what changed was simply that I held myself to a higher standard of life and as a result this affected other people as well. I stopped living life for everybody else and start living my own life. Since than I've learned to say no more easily if it is congruent with my standards and goals. This doesn't mean I'm rude but everybody has accepted my answer so far. All I can think of is that there's a certain conviction behind my answer, they can hear that I won't budge no matter what.
So I hope this shows you another perspective to your situations and perhaps help you solve the problems in another way.
