In addition to guardian angels, we sometimes have dead relatives as spirit guides. I've read of one woman who's grandmother was her spirits guide, this woman mainly worked with her angels for all sorts of things but every now and then her Grandmouther would give her some advice on come topics. So, it could be your grandmouther, uncles, aunts, cousins.... etc, any of them could wind up as your spirit guides when they pass over.
Our guardian angels are someone we know from the "other side". We usually have many friends and also "whole souls" we work with when we pass over. These guardian angels might not be our friends here on earth but they definately ARE good friends, no matter how you cut it, since they are willing to work with us lifetime after lifetime.
As humans, we have a tendency to identify with only the friends we know in physical life, but I woud bet our "cosmic" friends on the other side are even better than the best friends we have here on earth. We have to get used to the fact that all the beings we know or have known that are dead, plus other beings like archangels and spirit guides, are VERY MUCH a part of our life now, even though we can't see them or even sometimes hear them. Once our awareness grows to a point were we finally realize other beings in this universe are working with us intimately everyday of our lives....then things will finally change for us and we'll see how we missed so much from before when we were not so aware.
