This is great advice from Peter. In the meantime, as a bit of inspiration, I was doing a graphics course in university, and we were using OpenGL. The best reference material I found on the web was from a guy who taught himself OpenGL and wrote tutorials on the way. Eventually, everyone in the class was using his site as the go to reference point.
