Rezzy - I'm not even sure the initial announcement will come from the US govt - it would be a better symbol of global harmony if it was more of a joint effort, like through the UN, EU or some combination of global agencies. Showing that everyone is on board will give more immediate street credibility in more countries, whereas an announcement just through the US could make other countries nervous. Although once it's out, the message will be global through the news agencies and online. And I'm sure the US - president, NASA, etc will have plenty to say.
