Actually you can add commercial stuff - but things like adsense (google ads) wont work on it.
Its advisable to host your own website, as well as have a network of free blogs like that with their own content pointing towards your main site (lots of reasons you want to be doing that).

Oh and as far as adding affiliates in the free wordpress blogs go, you can surely do them using the free blogs.
However its good to have a network of blogs pointing toward 1 main site, but there are many ways to do it so you can decide how you like to go about it.
