I agree, Amy. If the variation of language transmits meaning between the speaker and the listener, then the communication is meaningful.
My brothers and I have our own way of speaking amongst ourselves that sounds baffling and meaningless to others, but for us, all KINDS of meaning is communicated in our conversations. LOL-speak is just a chunked-up version of that.
