If someone came to me and asked what books I recommend for a sound understanding of basic financial principals, I would recommend:

Rich Dad Poor Dad

Forget about the author and focus on the content. For many people, this book is their first book that offers an awakening to how people view assets and what we should be teaching our children. A very important book and should be read by everyone that is not sophisticated in understanding assets and investments.

Then I would recommend The Richest Man in Babylon

This book lays a wonderful foundation on how to treat and take care of your money.

Then readers advance to Think and Grow Rich followed by Maximum Achievement (Brian Tracy) for books on thinking and becoming succesful and goal setting.
