So can I set up a site like this where I get money by telling people to click on ads (or just doing it myself) and not providing anything else of value?

I find all those "get a free ipod" sites more credible because it doesn't sound like the businesses involved are getting ripped off; people actually have to sign up for a trial to get credits, which is worth something to the companies, and the money is concentrated using a pyramid structure until it's enough to buy something.

If a site like this actually had that kind of offer, I can understand why a business would pay to get people into it because they make money from people who like the service and people who forget to cancel. In this case it's common knowledge that putting up an ad and telling people to click on it for a direct reward is a waste of money.

It may get the businesses a little attention for supporting this, but given that most people are just there to click the link, feel good, and go do something else I don't see how this can be more efficient than actual donations, regular advertising, and sponsoring real charities.

If they're really serious about this, they should look for trial offers like the free ipod sites.
