Yes, that is okay, although I think one of you will not find that satisfying in the long run (it could very well be you) and move on.
If he's only getting friendship and that's not what he wants he will tire of the whole thing and move on. If you find him shallow and boring (and I'm not saying he is) beyond the physical, you may decide to move on.
The fact that this is your first serious relationship speaks volumes in and of itself. Be very discerning and aware. You have nothing to lose by taking your time. It can only help you in the long run.
Among other things, this is a process in self-revelation. You will come out of this knowing so much more about yourself.
