Yes, I think you're right, Dorothy. And I believe the key is to remain clear and patient with your goals.
Still, as I suggest above, this is a little easier said than done, where big issues like relationships, and work, and security are involved.
And, although simply asking the question itself was useful to me, what I was really interested in was finding out how/if others have cut to the chase/kept on course through various minefields.
