Basically, you can either have your online business or work for some company that will allow you to work from home - but that usually doesn't pay well and is more like a part-time opportuniy. Many hi-tech companies allow their employees to work from home also. And forget these surveys for $$$ type companies.
I am an independent software author and I sell my software over the internet. It takes just a couple of hours a day and I am quite happy with the income, but, obviously, it requires a lot of technical skills.
Many people start with consulting until they can live off their product's income.
