Oh, 6 to 9 hours is the amount of time that I dedicated to studying for a typical exam. Memorizing all 7 chapters of my psychology textbook took a lot longer because it was an EXTREME amount of material. Yes, I was very determined.

As with anything that you remember, if you use the information, you will retain it longer. If you don't, it will fade away. The "word for word" knowledge of my textbook faded after about a week, but the salient concepts within those chapters remained for the rest of the semester (heck, some of it remains to this day -- 10 some-odd years later) because I continued to use it.
