Fear.

Fear is bred into our very epigenome. That's why the cycle of death and rebirth takes place. In the Yoga Sutras Patanjali likens this process to gold being burned at high temperatures to vaporize impurities. Same process, ouch, so painful sometimes! But, pain is good because otherwise we would all sit on our asses smiling and not doing anything.
