| For once, not only in America!
This issue is a difficult one. On the one hand I want my freedom to take what I like. I live in Australia where our laws regarding supplements are radical compared to USA, and it is a pain. Believe me, nothing is worse than having some physical wreck doctor or government clerk try to interfere in your life, in areas they know nothing about. Doctors are experts in their field, and so are clerks, but their fields aren't preventative medicine, or fitness. I feel awesomely, awesomely healthy and fit, and know that the supplements I choose to take contribute to that feeling.
However on the other hand, I am 51, and have over 35 years passionate, genuine experience in serious health, fitness, training and top level sports, and the truth is that the supplement industry and magazines are riddled with blatent criminals, and rubbish sold as products. But then the drug company controlled medical world has it's fair share of criminals, and dodgy (what side effects, two heads are better than one, aren't they?) drugs as well. I have an excellent memory, and have scoured training, fitness and health magazines since day one, and have seen the endless stream of 'breakthrough' scams, many of which resurface every 5-10 years. Some operators are so blatently smug and cocky, that they figure they'll get some suckers twice or more, plus a sea of new one's, fleecing them, before dissappearing again. It is radically astounding that people fall for the ridiculous claims made by even, in fact almost all the supposedly 'top' companies. 300% more strength, 500% more testosterone, 200% less fat, or the latest money spinner, highest level antioxidant reading according to my uncle's, auntie's, mother's, son's, cousin's, sister's GTA Scale - Genuine Tibetin Athenticated (by Swedish Scientists in a German Laboratory) - NB limited shipment. #@&*!!! Where's the phone, I'll take 20 bottles, before the price goes up. GEE THANKS!!! The sales teams must roll around on the floor laughing in disbelief when they come up with this rubbish, and it actually works. Some supplements, probably about 5% of what's out there, do actually work. For instance, quality protein powders are a godsend, particularly for anyone not interested in killing animals. High quality creatine works. Same for high quality parts of tribulus. Some of the dried 'supergreen' supplements are deluxe. And there are plenty of others. There are some honest, caring companies and people producing great products. I would love to see every supplement governed, tested and labelled for its actual authenticity of and sources of ingredients. But as far as being told what works, whats good for you, and what I can take, forget it! For example, I outlined in detail in another post how I ate dozens of eggs a day for years and years. I used to love being tested by 'experts' and doctors. They would comment on my incredible health and fitness, cholesterol levels, urine, blood profiles, etc, etc, and then be reduced to gibbering idiots when I told them what I ate. I was supposed to be dead. Or I was gonna pay big time later, was doing irreversable damage, and would never reach 50. I would love to scour the nursing homes and find those same 'experts' and doctors now, and make them spend a day with me, as long as they booked their ambulances and funerals in advance.
So, for me, I want to know exactly what is in what I am buying, and the sources and authenticity of materials, but I want to be my own judge of what I choose to consume, and what does what to me.
