Did you try telling the guy that you called him up and that you would talk to your boss? If your current place cannot give you the sort of employment you want, then you go somewhere else, simple as that. Call him up agian.
Alternatively, maybe this is a sign that the Universe (or God or whatever superconscious sentient entity you like to use, if any) doesn't want you to get this job and maybe has something greater in store.
