I'd go for the guides being a part of your consciousness theory. As in an iceberg, where the tip is your ego/personality identity, while what lies beneath the surface is your higher self, guides, angels; or whatever you would like to call them
.
However, I see no reason why certain spirits couldn't contact a person, eg a human who died 1000 years ago and "evolved", if it is right for you to contact them; who could help put you in contact with your true self....
