In a couple bodybuilding books by guys (Clarence Bass and former Mr. Universe Bill Pearl) that had been working out for over 50 years each, both said that injury is least apt to occur if working out in afternoon to evening as the body is more warmed up. Still, both largely work out around 4-6 am for convenience. If/when I go to the gym it's usually around 10/11 pm, though I ride my bike, do chin ups, and jump rope most any time throughout the day.
