I recommend you contact successful consultants in your field and try to work out some sort of alliance, which could eventually turn into a partnership. If you are secure enough in your abilities, you can also take the risk and go full time. But keep in mind that a lot of consultants fail, not because they are not experts in their field, but because they are not experts at selling -- in this case, themselves.
