It gets hurt... Maybe its consciousness splits into several different parts, which would be 'killing' it... The energy gets dissipated, sort of like a stiff wind hitting a fog bank. The energy is still there, but unable to form back together very easily or quickly.
Some people go out to actively fight astral entities so that they can gather the energy in themselves... My advice to them is to be careful when fighting monsters, or you'll become one yourself.
Just let the negative energy dissipate naturally, as our physical bodies have far more energy than we ever really need, if we just wake up and figure out that we can use it.
