If you consider an Earthly sense of purpose, it may be misleading to assume you have an over-riding life purpose, unless its basic survival. Over and above that, you are constantly changing and learning, so its only logical that your driving force (passion) will evolve with you. Consider your different life phases, singlehood, partnership, marriage, family; different phases of your work life, spiritual or religious life and other meaningful pursuits that give your life added value. All of it shapes your a perceived purpose in this lifetime.
For instance, if you fall seriously ill, the most significant motivation will likely be to concentrate on healing or living your life to the fullest for as much time as you have left. If you have children, and they become your focus as they grow up, your evolving purpose may be to find a way to live in a secure area and give them opportunities for education, health care and the chance to make contributions to society. If you discover creative talents, part of your purpose would likely be to search out outlets to shape that side of you. if you discover scientific or athletic ability, then your purpose would be further clarified by developing those areas of yoruself which give you pleasure. If you choose to devote yourself to a life concerning a God or Higher Forces, then your life choices will gain meaning that way.
A purpose appears to be the result of making choices which contribute to your sense of happiness and completeness. This may involve some of things Steve Pavlina describes including, freedom, the ability to inspire or motivate others, or, maybe purpose is simply to exist while you can as best you can using whatever resources you detect inside yourself and around you? This would also bring in increasing self-awareness.
