meditation is great for greating a gap of awareness between your reaction to events and your conditioned behavior. The more you train your awareness, the greater control you have over the way you act. You realise that you dont need to behave how your emotional reactions are telling you and you free yourself from your past conditioning.

The practice of sitting in the same posture for 15-20 minutes is great because it trains your ability to accept itches, uncomfortable sensations or slight pain. You learn to observe boredom or anger or your own thoughts and recognise them as physical senstaions or just stuff that happens in your head. This helps you maintain your commitments and do what you really value without your past getting in the way in the form of old patterns of thought.
