That's right. Some people may have lived a fairly isolated life, and now when they
want to meet people they're incredibly inexperienced, and the prospect of approaching someone in person is frightening. Interacting with someone online first allows them to build up a little rapport so face-to-face interaction isn't as confronting.
Of course other people, such as myself, see online interaction as an extension of offline interaction. Why
not meet people online, especially if you spend a lot of time in front of the computer? I've had relationships (both platonic and romantic) that were a direct or indirect result of online interaction (ironically the sexual relationship didn't develop on dating sites).
