you would think there is always suffering involved, but there are some spirits who stick around because they like it here or because they want to be helpful. like, i know of a woman who works at a massage therapy place and there is a spirit there who, for example, has extinguished candles left burning overnight before. a healer tried to help it and it was like, 'no way, i like helping and being here!' (it was formerly the spirit's house.) but i would say, my sense is this is the exception, rather than the rule. many of them are aware of their situation, and there's also some that aren't. if the experience right before death was overwhelming enough the awareness may be in shock, replaying the previous life instead of understanding what has happened. i help in a more hands-on way for the ones that understand they died. for whatever reason, Source wants to be in charge of helping the ones that were in shock.
the vast majority of them are in pain and fear. they don't purposefully make things difficult for living people. yes, there's exceptions, but most of them aren't trying to make our own experience harder.
