I would make sure I actually need a degree -- online or offline -- before making a financial commitment. Make sure that you know precisely why you are getting the degree. Also make sure you are prepared enough to make it through.
Your decision to get experience first is very wise. I have a friend who wants to be a pilot, but he barely missed the required mark to graduate from his (offline) college. He basically ended up with no formal accreditation, and a large debt.
I think your idea of an online degree is a good one. I don't know about piloting, but it seems employers are still more interested in your skills and experience than some generic college degree.
