I find this question interesting as its one I've had conflict with over the years. From my understanding, my personal emotions and my intuitive sensing have different sources of origin.
If we let our personal emotions run the show, then we can, as 'Yeslist' says, become slaves to our circumstances and I believe once we are aware we have a choice, we can 'choose' how we wish to respond to any situation. From there we are able to create.
'Intuiting' or opening to deeper wisdom, often begins with an emotional prompt. Like 'I get a feeling, or I'm feeling ...' but there is nothing concrete in your physical life to relate the feeling to.
I've found two tools that help me identify physical emotions from intuitive prompts. The first one is locating the feeling in my body. Intuition comes from my heart chakra or just a little below. Fears and emotions are lower down in my gut.
The second one is taking a look at the people I'm attracting to me. If I'm suddenly surrounded my people with emotional problems, its usually because I'm riding in my own too much. The people around us act as mirrors.
