I do have one comment about traditional religions, and that is that they portray a relationship with God in a linear way, thus limiting the growth of consciousness

One reason for this is that, after being founded by people of extremely high level of consciousness, the leaders from one or more generations later are usually operating at a much lower level of consciousness, often Mythic in the past (Wilber term). At this level it is literal 'man in the sky' and this is where the religion ends up.

'Putting on the Mind of Christ' is a good book from this viewpoint - if you are not put off by the author's string RC background.
