I am huge fan of farmer's markets - if you do farm shares or coops they are cheaper as well.
Not only does the money go directly to the farmer - (they only make 5-30% on grocery stuff and sometimes not even that) but it also helps cut down on sprawl - the pressure for farmers making $75,000 a year on land worth $10,000,000 is pretty intense - if they can make a decent living farming many are less inclined to sell.
If you can't get local - buy Organic Valley - it is farmer-owned.
I also make my own cleaners -and for most stuff warm water and light soap are enough....baking soda is pretty effective too.
however i disagree with the meatless- just buy grass fed humanely raised beef, poultry and dairy and eggs..... exclusively and you'll be doing more than skipping meat once if you eat industrial foods.
