In my experience, I thought I had found my soul mate about eight or so times, from having signs like uncanny similarities, an incredibly strong pull, things like that. I now know they all did serve some purpose in my life, but that didnt mean they were a (or THE) person i should spend my entire life with. Some of them I actually believe were probably soul mates of mine, but have veered off their paths in this life. I believe there are several soul mates, but the choices people make in this life could make them, say, not a very good "earth mate." But there are more in the world...
I myself found a soul mate who is also a wonderful earth mate. I am greatful for him. I would say there was that thing where you "just know", but the stupid thing is I thought I felt that "you just know" thing with the rest of them too! There is a difference, but I cannot think of a way to explain it.
The best way I can think of is like shopping for a pair of jeans (or for some, its shopping for a swimsuit, either way)... We women are eternally shopping for that GREAT fitting pair of jeans that fit incredibly awesome, are super comfy, make you feel like a million bucks cuz you just know you look stunning in them. We usually never find such pair, and we dream of the day we do. It pretty much never happens, and usually when we shop, we find a pair that is good enough, or even some that are pretty damn close (if only they were just a TAD bit longer...) BUT if you have ever had the experience, you know that when it happens, YOU JUST KNOW! In a way that you have never even imagined. First, you see them on the hanger. WOW! Those are awesome jeans, I wonder if they have my size... They do! It is already so exciting... when you go to try them on, its like angels are singing from the heavens. You cannot believe you have finally found the perfect jeans. You are suddenly in love with your own reflection in the mirror because the jeans just compliment you so terrifficly. You want to tell the world about them. You feel tremendous joy in your heart. You feel like all your prayers have been answered. It literally is THAT good, better than you ever even imagined possible. And every time you wear them, you always feel like God must have made them specifically for you and you thank him for them every time.
