The Rampage of Appreciation
Well, I'll have to paraphrase it, but best to actually read the book. Basically you start where you are. Focus on something in your view that you can be grateful for. any little or big thing or quality will do. Say to yourself or outloud a few reasons why you appreciate it. Then move to another thing or quality, and say a few reasons why you appreciate it. Repeat.
My friend V was having all kinds of troubles and had a hard time starting, but she chose the gray wall behind me and said she appreciated the gray color because it reminded her of her mom's hair, and it made her feel calm. She appreciated the glass of wine in front of her and found lots of reasons to appreciate that! Then she said she could appreciate the waitress because of how hard she had to work and managed to smile and make us feel welcome and well-wined. Next, she looked me in the eye, told me she appreciated me and was grateful to have a friend who loved her enough to care about having her feel better. We got pretty verklempt at that point. Ok, maybe part of it was the wine.
If you're open to feeling gratitude, joy can blossom inside even the most glum heart. I warned you, it sounds pollyanna-ish. In practice, it really can transform your mood.
