I've had that danged streetlight thing happen to me, too! Like all the time! I thought it was just natural glitches in the lights but people I've mentioned it to think I'm being weird and say it doesn't happen to them at all. Streetlights going out and then coming back on after you pass? Whatever, dude!
I haven't noticed it associated with any sort of stress, although I'm usually deep in thought when it starts happening. That might be something you're bringing to the table outside of the phenomenon itself.
Spiritual energy is kind of like e-mail. Have you ever sent a friendly e-mail and have the person receiving it think you were being mean or sarcastic? The text you both saw was the same but you derived different meanings from it. What you're perceiving as a "dark" force may in fact just be "quite a lot of pent-up" force, so much so that it's overwhelming. At the same time, better safe than sorry so I don't blame you for avoiding it.
