It's just a definition. It's like calling a bit of stuff in our universe a quantum mechanical
particle, rather than focusing on the apparent, but incorrect,
wave-particle duality from classical physics. What I do is group pre-nondualistic concepts of material and spiritual properties of a bit of stuff in our universe and call whatever that is material. Granted, this doesn't really make a difference to what actually exists, but the way it's presented makes it easier to work with.
