Tony Robbins' "Unlimited Power" has a useful technique here. When a voice (especially a negative one) is going on in your head just turn its volume down so that you can't hear it rather than engaging in argument. (It almost always wants to win more badly than you do).
I've done this a few times myself and it actually works. When to use this technique is another matter, and a personal judgement call. IMO, the adversarial system is an overrated way of getting at the truth that leads to binary thinking, but it's totally your call.
