If you meditate and you focus your attention on breathing, at some point your mind wanders, and different thoughts go through your mind, sometimes you remember something about the past and sometimes you think of future events/possibilities. As far as addressing those thoughts goes, the point is just to acknowledge them and shift your focus on breathing again. If these thoughts could be considered ''messages' from your subconscious. I'm not sure how else you'd be able to be in the Now and explore whether or not your subconscious and unconscious parts are past- or future-focused.
Maybe someone else could offer more insights..I'd be also interested in hearing it.
