If you are hoping to make money with adsense etc. you are going to need traffic to your website. For that reason alone, I would suggest that you start your site with your own domain, hosting and a wordpress blog.
You'll find it very difficult to keep your ranking and traffic if you decide to change from a free sub-domain name later on.
At least get yourself a domain name and point it to a blogger or wordpress blog, that way you keep your domain even if you opt for professional hosting down the road.
