Having lived through Vietnam I do see some similarities between the later stages of that conflict and what I can discern about the status of the current conflicts. The country does not appear to be supportive of wars which last as long as Vietnam and the current conflicts.
I believe there is a real chance that the U.S. will declare victory and bring all the troops home as in Vietnam. It was fiction that victory was achieved in Vietnam by American forces and diplomacy and would be a fiction if the same strategy was executed today.
I was not a supporter of waging war in Iraq. I did not believe Sadam was a nice man or benevolent ruler. One of the founding fathers said we are the friends of liberty everywhere but the guarantors only of our own. It was not in the interest of the U.S. or the Iraqi people for us to intervene in the way we intervened.
I think it is a bad idea to kill people. I have seen the kind of violence that is occurring in these theaters of war, it is not a pleasant experience. I was concerned about the intervention in Afghanistan. I hope for a good outcome from a tenuous situation.
A new reality could be very nice.
