I've heard it a hundred times, the law of attraction always works, every time, all the time, whether you realize it or not. So why must we work at it? Why do we have to enter a certain state of mind, play this movie in our minds over and over every day until we start to see syncronicities, and then take action on them? I didn't have to do that to create my life so far. (it just happened "by itself")

I have manifested everything in my life (as we all have) without purposely creating it. Just by living you are creating your life, so why is it necessary to create intentions and apply all these exercises to them in order to bring them about?

Or does this just make changes happen faster?
You are over complicating it. And yes, it is always working. And yes, intentionally using your powers of imagination and intent will cause change to occur in your life more rapidly than it would otherwise.

All the law of attraction says is, "that which is like unto itself is drawn".

So visualization, affirmations, imagination, etc., is just a means of getting you to become different so you can attract different.

If you are fine with the way things are, then none of that is necessary, because you will continue to attract experiences that reflect whatever your state of consciousness is right now. Also, change will normally happen in your life anyway, because life will cause you to grow, which results in a change in your mental state, which then translates into you attracting slightly different experiences.

But it's like the difference between learning intentionally and just learning accidentally. Intentionally is usually far more effective. Intention manifestation is the same way.
