Who ever said religion was any good for anyone?
Religion is a construct of self-righteous, power-hungry human beings who are clever enough to recognize the desire within most humans to avoid responsibility for their own lives.
Jesus did not create Christianity. The lesser-enlightened of his followers did that. He merely brought a message to humanity that has since been warped to serve the selfish needs of closed-minded control freaks.
Show me anybody with a marketable idea, talent, skill, or looks, and before one can say, "Piece of the action," a thousand leeches are climbing over each other to be first in line to exploit that naturally positive gift into material gain for themselves.
If I were King of the World, my first act would be to ban ALL religions from society. That does not mean, however, that I would ban SPIRITUALITY. I would simply outlaw any attempts to organize churches around any spiritual belief systems, as well as outlaw any proactive attempts to recruit others to subscribe to any particular belief system.
I would make it a crime to teach children -- public or private -- that any particular spiritual belief is any more true than any other. I would, however, ensure that all public libraries maintained sections that covered ALL spiritual philosophies and theories, so long as they contained within their tenets respect and loving allowance for all beings to freely believe to the contrary, (or not at all), as well as being devoid of any support for any negative behaviors and attitudes.
That done, if people chose to pray towards Mecca 5x a day, or put fish symbols on their cars, or wear aluminum pyramid hats in the desert, I could not care less. Each is a unique path to God, and so long as the person behaves in a postive manner and doesn't go around trying to push their beliefs on anyone else, I support ANY expression of one's spirituality, no matter how weird it might seem to others. Seeking to know God is never a bad thing. Religion, however, has proven to be quite a bad thing, indeed.
