There is a time and place to have such conversations.
I prefer to let somebody know in person.
via email and txt are gawd-awful.
Phone is almost as bad...
if there is a serious relationship involved, the very least the other person deserves* is a proper conversation, with space created for the other person to communicate back.
* - unless of course there are safety issues or spiteful events involved...
