I wouldn't recommend gum. Chewing gum leads to ingestion of sugar (or fake sugar), plus the taste will make you hungrier. You definitely do not want that on a fast. I would recommend gargling with salt water and brushing your tongue a few times a day. You do not need much toothpaste at all.
