I've often thought that if I were to get married, I'd like for my beloved and I to co-create a new last name. That way the name would symbolize the new life we were creating together; the children, if any, would have the same last name as
both their parents; but there would be no intimation that one had become the "property" of the other.
It would be a union of equals, freely chosen. And chosen again. Every day.
