I had the same type of symptoms the night after spray-painting a car with a defective respirator. A few years ago I had similar symptoms after removing old tar-based car insulation. I used a torch to melt the tar enough to scrape it off. I wasn't wearing a respirator. In each case I thought I was coming down with the flu but after a day I was back to normal.
