For me personally, if I have a small amount of material to cover, I'm able to read it and memorize it. However, if I need to go through a lot of material,I'd say repetition is the key for me. First I only read one chunk to get a big picture, then I re-read it and make notes (mind mapping works well for me as I'm a very visual person), and later it is enough for me to only ''scan'' the map for revision.

As far as misplacing keys and wallet goes, set a place where you always put them.
For keeping appointments, well...write them down, set the alarm on your cell phone...that's what I do
