"My ideas" includes the possibility of your experiences...if the people/spirits involved maintain these kinds of belief systems.
i.e. if a spirit "thinks" it needs to work out a karmic debt this way, then it does.
It is very similar to Erin's post about hell.
What I'm getting at is...if this is so...then it is "self-inflicted" and could be shed through working out the belief and eliminating that.
That is how it works for most things "down here". And as the old teaching goes..."as below, so above".
This is just my take...and not proven in any way. It's just what intuitively feels right for me. Your experiences may lead you in a different direction...but this particular conclusion in all likelyhood does not serve the OP.
