Default Star Trek of Spirituality

On watching the Making of of STTNG Season 1, particularly "Mission Logs - Year 1 - The Beginning", I felt again this sense of exploration, of moving into uncharted territory, of adventure.

How can this sense of wonder, of being the first to do something and go someplace, be transferred to spiritual discovery and enlightenment? How can this be transformed into something that opens up the realms of the soul and self-improvement for a format that enchants a broad populace? How can I make a "Star Trek of Spirituality"?

I'm going to throw this in here, under fun and recreation, and make a shared writing fun event out of it. I'll give you a first glimpse of what ideas sprang to my mind:

Possible plot:

A man and a woman, soulmates, who get drawn towards each other and meet in a series of what seem to be coincidences but aren't. They are the main characters, and "in the astral", they can "merge" into a singular being that they are the halves of. This being is more knowledgeable, more powerful but also less caring about humans, seeing a bigger picture (much like Clark Kent's kryptonian father in the series "Smallville"). This being saves the day in the first adventure, but at the cost of several human lives the pair loved dearly. They vow to never merge again, even though the being tells their friends that death is not an end, and that basically nothing was lost at all.

The further adventures will deal with the learning process of how these different levels of existence work, and with their voyage of self-discovery. Notable incidents might include OOBEs, meeting "the watcher by the threshold", and eventually, by the end of the first season, a second merging of the two, accepting the possible consequences, but realizing the necessity and the greater good.

The basic idea of the project would be to transport a sense of continuous wonder and amazement, of new roads opening, all the while teaching without teaching the basics of spiritual self-discovery.

Are you still with me? Good! What do you think? What are your ideas?
