I do believe that the most successful people start on their own, but if you lack (proof of) the skills and the connections, it's best to at least start schooling. Along the way, you can make connections with teachers and clients, and (most importantly) get an internship to get experience.
Once you finish the degree, you have (along with the internship) proof that you can be a fashion advisor and you should have enough connections by then to pursue your dream afterwards in whatever fashion you choose (job or starting your own business).
