I think here lies your answer... kids are used to teachers allready. For some it will mean paying attention, while for others it means daydreaming..
I would say to engage them is to NOT be teacher like. Be more of a friend or somebody on equal level with them.
For example, have them change the layout of the classroom into a circle, or sit on the floor... Move them outside on a sunny day.
Start with something out of the ordinary. Something they normally do not see in school.
Let them tell you how and why these techniques could be good for them.
I applaud you for your commitment with children. I think it is a good age group to start with!
